- Aromatherapy -

Aromatherapy is at least as old as the pyramids. It is both art and science that uses scents from essential oils to treat emotional and physical conditions through the nose. Essential oils are the basis for making fragrances oils. Perfumes may be made from essential oils or fragrance oils. Because essential oils come from plants, prices vary by the amount of crop produced and the difficulty of extracting the essential oil from the plant. Whether you want essential oils to treat particular problems or just because they smell good. HB has fine essential oils for you.

Some uses of aromatherapy. Add an essential oil to a carrier oil or unscented lotion and you’re ready for massage. Create your own fragrance for everyday wear or special occasions. Add essential oil to water and make your own room spray. (Don’t use a carrier oil or the mister will clog.) Change your mood with a sniff of an essential oil. Though not intended to replace a doctor’s care, essential oils can help treat health problems. The uses are endless and wonderful to smell.

What diffuser is for you? Some diffusers have a bowl on top and a place for a candle below. To use you place water in the bowl, add a few drops of essential oil, and light the candle below. This is probably the most popular type and can be found in many different designs. Electric operated diffusers have a pad or canister, often a fan, and need electricity to operate. (Check to see if it uses essential oil and how it is replenished. Some canister models require you use their canister only and it may not even be essential oil.) HB carries electric diffusers for home and car that use a pad and your own oil. Unglazed clay diffusers are passive and continuous, meaning no electricity or candle is needed. These come in many different designs and may be the oldest and simplest way to use aromatherapy. Just place essential oil on or in and diffusion begins. Electric with fan will have the strongest scent but will not last as long and may be hard to refill. Candle will have the ability to vary the intensity of the smell but has a flame to attend. Unglazed will be linger longer and need refill less often but may have a less intense smell.  

Because essential oils are very concentrated a little goes a long way. (Bottles are 10ml unless otherwise noted.) Though some essential oils may be applied “neat” to the skin, when in doubt, please dilute. That’s why essential oils are often added to carrier oils. It extends or carries the scent, is easier on your wallet, and may prevent skin irritation. A good carrier oil is one that has little or no fragrance itself and ideally is light to the touch.

A friend of mine received a large bottle of lavender oil as a gift. (Normally a relaxing soothing scent.) She dropped it accidentally on the floor and it broke. (Lavender oil isn’t relaxing to her since it covered her floor years ago!)
